Who's Eligible?
Do you wonder if you are a patient that is considered "homebound" as defined by Medicare? Consider these factors...
1. The definition of homebound is that it ordinarily takes a "considerable and taxing effort to leave the home without assistance".
2. Homebound does not mean bedbound.
3. Homebound does not need to be forever, it can be a reasonably short term.
4. Homebound does not prohibit your patient from leaving home to go to church, medical appointments, for a ride in the car, out for a meal or for personal care services.
5. The need to have another person with you in order to leave home is considered a "taxing effort" in most cases.
6. The need to use a device to walk - such as a walker, cane, crutches - or a wheelchair, is considered a "taxing effort".
7. If your patient can walk unattended, but becomes short of breath and needs frequent rest stops while walking - that is a "taxing effort".
8. If your patient has some level of confusion and should not leave home alone, that is also considered homebound.
9. Homebound can be directed by you for a limited period for medical/safety reasons.
10. If you are in doubt, call the Vineyard Nursing Association, we'll figure it out.
