The stroke support group is a "mutual-help" group comprised of stroke survivors and caregivers who come together in an atmosphere of compassion, acceptance, and emotional support.  While there are no easy answers to the challenges that a stroke creates, the group members' sharing of common experiences may serve to help ease frustrations and find new solutions.

Professionals are invited to share information pertinent to stroke issues. Most importantly, new friendships have been made, strengths have been uncovered and successes have been celebrated during the meetings.

“A common theme discussed at the stroke support group is socializing.  The general public often does not acknowledge that the stroke survivor has not lost their intelligence; they just have trouble communicating.  Sharing strategies and frustrations in a group environment reinforces that we are not alone: we can talk about rehabilitation options in our community and how to embrace that community.  Our meeting is, for some, the only social outing they have all month. While Todd and I have learned a great deal about neuroplasticity in the past three years, we were lacking in the personal experience side of recovery.  We have both found great comfort in the wisdom that others have shared about their own personal experiences. Be respectful, patient, do your best, and try not to take anyone or anything personally.  This stroke support group is crucial to the self esteem of the survivor and continued sanity of the caregiver.  We are very grateful to the VNA for hosting this group! “

Thank you, Todd McGee and Susan Dunbar
